GESM PE teacher smashes Gatorade Run
On a Sunday at 3:30 am in the middle of the night only the "crazy" endurance-trained athletes sneak out of the house and onto the street. Let's be honest, that´s how Europeans think. However, thousands of participants fought for fast times and to become front runners at the Gatorade Run around the Mall of Asia last weekend, and some ran for the pure joy of it. The GESM sports faculty members could not resist tying their running shoes.
Mathias Haut, Timo Hölzchen, Susi Klingbeil, Brad Ransom and Ander Rekakoetxea had registered as Team GESM on the 11 km distance. No athlete was bribed in the run-up to this first advent, which produced a victory and two further top ten placements. Although, little impressed by the early start of 4:50 a.m. Ander had particularly good legs that morning. With a clear lead, the Spaniard was the first to cross the finish line in a total time of 45 minutes. Klingbeil (59 min) and Hölzchen (47 min) also had an excellent 4th place, but this time they had to be satisfied with the "wooden spoon". Only 1 second separated the 8D class teacher from the jump on the podium. Haut (19th) and Ransom (26th) convinced with times of 55 and 57 min, meaning the 1-hour-barrier was broken by all five PE teachers.
As it turned out, Romel del Mundo and Carmel Jane Andrada were also among the participants and got the coveted finisher shirt. It seems as if the GESM will continue to be on regional running events in the future - who knows, maybe even more by students ;-)
