IB Diploma Programme
Abitur - The IB Diploma is equivalent to the German “Abitur” if certain conditions are met. The final IB points can be converted into German Abiturnoten, which is the equivalent of the Abiturprüfung, and students are eligible to attend German universities. However, universities may request that the students take a test in German if they do not hold a German passport. The main condition for the IB diploma to be equivalent to the German Abitur is that students have to choose at least one science or mathematics at Higher Level. It is important to note that Math Studies is not acceptable (it must be Math SL or Math HL). Taking a subject taught in the German language is NOT a requirement for the Abitur. However, this is advisable if the student is planning to study in Germany, as universities require a sound knowledge of the German language.
GIB – The “Gemischtsprachige Internationales Baccalaureate.” The GESM is one of the very few schools worldwide that offer three IB-courses, namely Biology and History (Geschichte) and German Language and Literature, all of which are taught and assessed entirely in the German language. As with the German Abitur, the conditions stated above for the mono-lingual IB diploma apply. However, a foreign passport holder awarded the GIB–Diploma may be exempted from the German language test that is required by many universities. We recommend our GIB-programme for all students who wish to study in Germany.
