MESSAGE
FROM THE
HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear parents, dear students, dear teachers,
At this time besides the final IB exams GESM focuses strongly on music as this circular clearly shows. From Josh, Patricia, Hanna and Chloe we received a report on their experiences at the Instrumental Workshop held last week Friday at GESM. Their statements and the pictures make quite clear how much they profited from this musical offer and what they learned from their teachers.

Besides this workshop we had the first of two Musical Recital Series yesterday. On this occasion our students presented what they have learned this school year in regular music lessons and GESM music school. Dia Mate, Josh Wong, Rica Garrido, Zsaira Carane with the support of Jerry Rodriguez and Marius Sehrbrock performed in the auditorium – just read the statements and see the pictures in this circular. The second Musical Recital will be on Monday, May 12 at 08 am in the auditorium when we will see more students presenting their skills on drums, violin and piano. At this point I would like to cordially invite you to this performance – program and invitation you may also find in this newsletter.

Another announcement: May 15 to 29 you can participate in Paralong Pinoy at Eurocampus, an offer of LFM to experience Philippine culture.

Last Saturday Alexis Matus and Mohit Kumar of grade 9 I left for a three week language course in Germany. From Mr. Lawrence Buck as Head of International Section we received a report giving details on their preparation and departure. I wish both of them good weather in Germany, making good friends and new acquaintances from all over the world and most important that they can improve significantly on their German language skills.

Next week from Tuesday onwards we will concentrate very much on the final oral examinations in grade 10 D. Due to this examination we will welcome Ms. Bauni at GESM. As the Federal States Chairperson of the Federal Government-Federal States Committee for Schools Abroad she will chair the examinations, meet the Headmaster of the Lycée Francais de Manille, make lesson visits and of course will meet with the GESM school management.
Furthermore next week nine students of GESM will fly to Kuala Lumpur to represent GESM at the Cultural Festival of the German Schools in South East Asia. Ms. Rösner and Mr. Hoffmann have prepared the workshops GESM will offer in KL and will accompany our students. All participants I wish a very interesting experience in Malaysia. I am already looking forward to hear about their experiences.

Finally I would like to draw your attention to my information on how our students should avoid dehydration at school during this period of days.
With kind regards,
Andreas Thiergen
GESM Headmaster
GESM hosted our third annual Instrumental Workshop last Friday, May 4, 2018. It was a day full of fun and learning music together with our specialists coming from different music communities such as ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra and Philippine Research and Development for Instrumental Soloists. There were at least 40 students participated in the said workshop.

All sections of instruments were split into groups and given their own private teachers. Mr. Felicito Sacdalan, the conductor of SSC Wind Orchestra, taught our section (saxophone and clarinet)
Joshua, Grade 6I
The workshop was a great opportunity for me. My favourite part was when everyone rehearsed together because we all created music together and it was fun. I’ve learned a lot about playing the violin and I hope that we can have another workshop next school year.

Patricia, Grade 7I
On the 4th of May, some students from different grades were invited to attend a workshop. The music workshop was well-structured and insightful. It helped me personally, as a flutist, to develop my way of techniques on how to blow the flute and allowed me more time to practice for the concert. The flute teacher was very kind and skillful and showed us different techniques on how to play the flute properly. Overall it was a very fun workshop!

PASCH scholarships – the opportunity to learn German in Germany
with students from all over the world
Once again we are proud to announce, that in cooperation with the Goethe Institute Manila we are sending two of our students to Germany for German classes. The students we chose are very capable and highly motivated. They have worked hard at developing their fluency in German and now with the scholarships they get the opportunity to be immersed in German language and culture in Germany.

The language classes
The group’s destination is St. Peter Ording in the north of Germany directly located at the North Sea. There they will practice German for three weeks in a language camp and experience the culture together with other students from all over the world.
At the center of the course are the German lessons. Every morning from Monday to Friday the students will have intensive German lessons. This happens in small groups, which are adjusted to the language ability of the students.
Project lessons

In addition to the core language classes the students have project classes twice a week in the afternoon. This offers them the opportunity to use their new knowledge in different contexts and to actively create their own experiences with the German language.

Excursions
There will also be three excursions, where the students will visit Universities, research facilities or German companies.

On Friday 4th May, Mohit Kumar (9I) and Alexis Matus (9I) together with their families, Ms. Lippman one of our German teachers and Mr Buck, Head of International Section met with all the other students from schools in Manila chosen to go to Germany for an orientation and a "Farewell " lunch. The reception room was full of excitement as they were addressed by Ms Katharina Pfeiffer, Deputy Director of the Centre who welcomed them and introduced the activities the students would complete during the orientation session.
Just before they departed Manila very late the following day our GESM students had this to say. From Alexis, “I am very excited to go to Germany and meet everyone and be given this chance to improve my German, especially because I want to go to university there. Yes, I am a bit nervous however I think it will be really fun meeting everyone and making new friends while speaking German!”
Mohit commented that, “I love learning new languages and improving on the ones I already speak. I am truly delighted to have been given the opportunity to be a part of the few who are going to Germany this year, attending the Deutschkurs. I believe this course will not only enhance my knowledge and love for the German language, but also allow me to interact with people from different cultures and at the same time, learn a lot about German culture, too. I am glad to actually learn German in Germany because in my opinion, it helps the learner improve tremendously when learning with German native speakers.”
Early on Sunday morning we were all pleased to receive the following message from Ms. Pfeiffer: “Dear teachers and coordinators of this year’s PASCH exchange, I received the message below – all PASCH scholars have arrived in St. Peter Ording safe and sound.”
Good luck everyone and do enjoy this remarkable opportunity offered by Goethe Institute and PASCH !

LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTER
Dear Parents and Teachers,

As we expect the present heat wave to continue this week, GESM school management would like to ask you as parents to help us to keep your children hydrated during these hot days.

Please remind your children not to forget to drink constantly during their time at school and encourage them to remain in shaded areas when on recess and especially during lunch time.

At school we will be taking precautionary measures regarding the health of our school community. Supervision teachers will limit running and chasing games during break times. Also we will encourage all of our students to remain in shaded areas when on recess or during lunch time. We will continue to remind all teachers and especially the sports teachers to ensure all students keep hydrated.

During lessons on the field or in the gym the sports teachers will continue monitoring the temperature as well as the condition of the students as to possible negative effects of heat.

Thank you very much for your cooperation.
We will resume to our normal schedule starting May 15, 2018, Tuesday.
