All of us know the safety instructions prior to take off. Many of us don't even listen to the instructions anymore, we just consider them background noise while getting ready for the flight. After all, what is the probability that you will really have to get into the brace position?
Ask your child about fire drills in school. What is practiced? How seriously do students take these drills, because the fact is: the slower you walk, the longer the break will be. There is laughter and talking, certainly no sense of urgency.
If drills are not taken seriously, why do we run mock examinations for Grade 12 and Grade 10 students? The reasons are similar to the scenarios mentioned above: to identify weaknesses, to enhance familiarity with the process, to learn strategies for how to cope with stress, to learn to comply with the requirements.
Grade 12 just finished mocks after 9 days and 71 different papers with perfect attendance, excellent behavior and admirable stamina. A great team of teachers prepared and will mark all of the papers, after they invigilated the exams.
Like the "Brace! Brace!" call does not get your pulse racing and your blood pressure up anymore, so will our G12 students, who will be calm, at ease and well prepared for the real exam starting April 27.
To G12: Brace! Brace! But stay calm and carry on. We know you can do it!
