“Practice empathy”, “take effective notes”, “interpret data”, “build consensus” - some of the 50+ approaches to learning skills that the IB identifies, but that are part of good teaching practices everywhere. The first coffee morning of the year brought together more than 30 parents from the German and English Secondary community. Over coffee and pastries, they engaged in conversations and activities around these learning skills, organizing them in a variety of ways. The parents shared priorities and all agreed that the foundation for all learning, especially self-management and social skills are rooted in Primary School, while research and critical thinking has more room in the high school classes: the IGCSE, KMK and IBDP classes. Throughout the years in school, communication skills are essential and need to be fostered. The morning closed with some reflection on the parents’ own learning strategies used this morning.
Mark your calendar for the next coffee morning session: November 7 to learn more about the German as an Additional language with DaF coordinator Herr Volker Schlieske!
The German European School Manila (GESM) organizes a series of "Coffee Morning Sessions" for parents throughout the school year. These take the form of presentations, workshops or discussions that aim to inform parents more about the educational frameworks and curricula that we work with.
