Current Affairs & Political Education at GESM

by Stephanie Steinberg

Over 35 “thumbs up” emojis from the IB classes only showed up within two minutes for the MS Teams invitation to join a special event in the auditorium. On Wednesday morning, around 150 students from Grades 9 to 12 came together to watch the U.S. presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. Classes from the LFM joined, as well as several colleagues from both schools. Quickly, every seat and bench were taken, a full house in front of the whole screen projection.

It was amazing to see the attention and focus most students displayed for over an hour to follow the guided discussion between these very different candidates. A debriefing of the debate was done in several classes not only about the presented content but rhetoric, body language and facial expressions.

While the U.S.A. seems to be far away, the result of the 2024 election will determine the course for years to come for many countries and regions. We used this current event to shape political awareness and to activate students’ thinking.
