For the second year running, the Rotary Club of Makati, alongside the De la Salle College of St. Benilde’s School of Diplomacy and International Affairs, hosted a Model United Nations Academy. This Philippines Department of Education initiative drew over 125 students on two consecutive Saturdays, January 28th and February 4th 2023, for extensive training sessions on how to be better MUN delegates.
It is with great pride that we can share that GESM’s very own Deputy Secretary General, Shagorika Kar (IB-1), was selected to deliver the opening student speech. Introduced by the President of the Rotary Club as a “talented and inspiring person” due to her commitment last year as a “Subject Matter Expert” for the Virtual MUNA Academy 2022, Shagorika shared with everyone how MUN has helped her to overcome her initial fears of speaking in public in front of more “experienced” delegates and how it has enabled her to “understand this could become a stepping stone to something even bigger in life”. As a UNESCO affiliated school, we are pleased that Shagorika has stepped up to continue our GESM mission to encourage local educational initiatives. Accordingly, we cordially invite any secondary school students to join our MUN Club Activity that will start up again for the second semester during the week of February 20th.
On the whole, the purpose of the event was to provide a sounder foundation of knowledge for these newly trained students to participate and shine in the upcoming BMUN Conference, slated to be held on the campus of St. Benilde College from March 2-4, 2023. At present, five select GESM students are registered to participate in this much anticipated in-person event that teaches respect, diplomacy and the complexities and challenges of currently evolving world crises by reaching peaceful and constructive resolutions.
