A group of Grade 12 students at GESM recently led a project to promote plastic bottle recycling within the school community. They collected used PET bottles, cleaned them, and coordinated their handover to Friends of Hope, an organization dedicated to recycling plastic waste. The turnover was led by Konrad and Lou, both Grade 12 students, who helped ensure the bottles reached their destination.
To raise awareness, the students put up informational posters during school events, encouraging proper waste separation. While they faced challenges in getting everyone to follow through, the experience taught them valuable lessons—not just about recycling, but also about the difficulties of changing habits and promoting environmental responsibility.
The project was supported by GIZ Philippines, the local branch of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). As a German development agency, GIZ works on sustainable solutions for global challenges, including environmental protection and waste management. Their guidance and support helped students better understand the bigger picture of plastic waste and sustainability.
This initiative may be just a small step, but it reflects a growing awareness and commitment among GESM students to making a difference—one bottle at a time.
