Grade 3 Explores Sustainability at BGC Community Farm

by Rebecca Gillen

On 17th February, our enthusiastic Grade 3 students embarked on an educational and eye-opening field trip to the BGC Community Farm. This experience provided them with a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of sustainability, urban farming, and environmental responsibility, linking directly to our PYP Unit, How We Organize Ourselves. This unit explores how rural and urban communities have unique characteristics and challenges that shape their way of life and development.

The day began with an engaging introduction from the farm’s resident experts, who explained the importance of urban gardening in promoting food security and reducing carbon footprints. Students eagerly participated in discussions about plant life cycles, composting, and the benefits of growing their own food. These discussions helped students reflect on how urban farming contributes to sustainable city living and supports community resilience.

One of the highlights of the trip was the gardening session, where students rolled up their sleeves and planted vegetables. Guided by the farm’s staff, they learned how to properly care for different crops and discovered the importance of soil health, sunlight, and water in plant growth. The experience of getting their hands dirty in the soil was both educational and enjoyable!

To conclude the trip, students had the chance to sample some fresh, farm-grown produce and reflect on their learnings. Many were inspired to be more mindful about sustainable living practices, recognizing how individual actions contribute to the well-being of a community.

The field trip to BGC Community Farm was an enriching experience that brought classroom lessons to life. It not only strengthened our students’ knowledge of environmental science but also nurtured a deeper appreciation for nature and responsible living. By linking their experience to How We Organize Ourselves, students gained a broader perspective on how communities adapt and innovate to meet environmental challenges.

A big thank you to the BGC Community Farm staff for their warm hospitality for making this trip a memorable one. We're looking forward to more hands-on learning adventures in the future!
