In the lesson unit “Reading Films – Understanding Films” at the German European School Manila, Class 9D engaged in an in-depth exploration of the fundamental elements of filmmaking. The students analyzed the visual, auditory, and narrative aspects of film, gaining an understanding of cinematic techniques such as framing, perspective, composition, sound, and storytelling.
As a final project, the students applied their knowledge by creating their own one-minute films. They had to effectively use their newly acquired skills to craft short but impactful narratives. The films showcased a wide range of creative ideas, from thrilling short stories to experimental cinematic approaches.
Through this hands-on experience, the students not only deepened their understanding of film composition but also developed teamwork, creativity, and technical skills. The final films were screened and analyzed together, allowing the class to reflect on their work and learn from one another.
This lesson unit demonstrated that films are not only meant to be consumed but can also be consciously created—an invaluable experience in enhancing the students’ media literacy.
