Unit of Inquiry Field Trip - Who We Are

by Ms. Gillen, Mr. Farrell & Ms. Goelnitz

Grade 3 students enjoyed learning about places of worship firsthand this past week. They were able to visit the Fo Guang Shan Temple and Beit Yaacov Synagogue. When we arrived at the temple, we were greeted at its impressive entrance by monks wearing traditional clothes. We were taken inside, and the students enjoyed learning about Buddha, his life, and teachings and some of the key principles of Buddhism. The students were delighted to light a candle and make a wish. They especially enjoyed learning about meditation and sitting quietly while listening to relaxing music.

The Beit Yaacov synagogue was also an amazing place to visit. Students particularly loved seeing the handwritten Torah and were intrigued by how large and beautiful it was. They also took turns blowing on the shofar, which is a horn blown on special occasions at the synagogue. The third graders were also warmly welcome by the Jewish community and loved being able to work on crafts with the kindergarteners from the synagogue.
